ERASING THE IMAGE
The original house on this small lot was a generic "Developer Special" from 1977 that was designed for any suburban site in America. In colloquial language, this house was "butt ugly"! Our charge was to transform this house into a comfortable modern farmhouse.
Eddie and Brendon were eager partners in the design process. Their program included adding a master bedroom suite using space from the over-sized garage, converting one of the small bedrooms into a wine bar, opening up the center of the house for a vaulted living space and a large front porch to invite interaction from passers-by on the sidewalk.
Emulating the similar form and style of the 1920's bungalow across the street, the house is clad in board and batten siding with a standing seam metal roof. For the front porch, we created tapered columns a staple of the California Arts & Crafts tradition.
On this small property, San Francisco's Outer Space Landscape Architects created an oasis in both the front and rear yards. In the front, raised beds for tomatoes and vegetables and in the rear, three spaces including built-in concrete seating areas with custom cushions and barbeque to serve the pergola-covered dining area.
